Project Overview
In the Niehoff Urban Studio at the University of Cincinnati, planning and architecture students worked closely with the Kroger Company to develop a plan for locating a urban superstore near downtown Cincinnati. For the studio, teams of students designed a multi-use development to find the best fit for the large footprints required for a 100,000 sq. ft. grocery store. I worked with one other planner and an architect graduate student to select a site between Gilbert Avenue and I-75 just north of downtown.
Site Selection and Analyzation
Our group chose this site based off of the need from the surrounding communities for a grocery store. The opportunity existed in a parking lot surrounded by office buildings off of I-75. The workers in the immediate area could support other uses such as lunchtime food and a workout gym.
We analyzed the site including traffic and pedestrian flow, land use and views from the highway.

Design
Our design included the Kroger superstore, retail, a workout gym, four floors of office and a parking garage. The following site plan shows its uses of rooftop gardens and solar power.
I produced digital renderings in 3D Studio Max and overlayed views of the project on existing photos. I also rendered an animation of a flyby showing the views from I-75.
